Recently, we completed a CCTV installation for a commercial building. Installation, testing and handover have been finished, and the system is now in daily operation, providing video monitoring of common areas and supporting the management office on security and incident follow-up when required.
A commercial building is different from an ordinary office. Tenants, staff, visitors and delivery personnel come and go every day, and the flow of people through the lobby, lift lobbies, service lane and car park is not the same. Work during office hours also has to limit disruption to tenants. After business hours, the main gate, goods-lift entrance, roof and electrical plant rooms still need to be monitored.
Planning therefore started with how the building operates and how people move through it. Coverage was then focused on the main entrances, lobby and lift lobbies, loading bay and service lane, car-park entrances, and restricted areas such as the roof and plant rooms. CCTV cameras are used in public areas and are not directed into individual tenant offices or toilets.
Installation also has to fit daily business. The lobby and lift lobbies are busy, so camera positions avoid columns, signs and spots that are easily blocked by crowds, and views are not set as unnecessary close-ups. The service lane and loading area are darker, with vehicles and trolleys, while car-park entrances need a clear view of vehicles entering and leaving. Cabling also has to follow the existing ceiling, trunking and fire-service installations, with work scheduled outside peak hours where possible to reduce disruption to tenants and visitors.
Our team handled the project throughout, from site survey and planning, equipment installation and fixing, signal and power cabling, and system configuration, to testing, picture adjustment and an operation briefing before handover. The deployment included:
- coverage of the lobby, lift lobbies, main entrances and visitor waiting areas, so the management office can follow daytime movement;
- coverage of the loading entrance, service lane and unloading area, including locations that are easier to overlook;
- coverage of car-park entrances and vehicle-route junctions, so arrivals and departures can be checked;
- coverage of restricted areas such as the roof, plant rooms and meter rooms, so access can still be reviewed after closing;
- live multi-view at the management office, with access rights and remote viewing set as required, so duty staff can retrieve images rather than leaving them only in a plant room;
- day and night testing of pictures, recording and login before handover, to confirm that coverage and retrieval meet the building’s management needs.
Once the system is in use, management staff can build it into the daily routine. Live views can support lobby and entrance duty during the day. After hours, the main gate, service lane and roof can be checked. If a tenant reports a lost item, damage in the lobby or a scrape in the car park, footage can be retrieved by time as a reference for internal follow-up.
This project again applies CCTV to a multi-tenant commercial building. We can propose a solution based on the site, business hours and how it is managed.
